Frequently Asked Questions
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by SARS CoV-2, a strain of coronavirus. The term COVID-19 is an abbreviation with ‘CO’ standing for corona, ‘VI’ for virus, ‘D’ for disease and ‘19’ for 2019 as the year the disease was recognized.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Symptoms of COVID-19 can appear as soon as 2 days after exposure and as late as 14 days. The symptoms include:
• Loss of taste and/or smell
• Sore throat
• Cough
• Congestion or runny nose
• Fever (of 100.4F or greater)
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Muscle or body aches
• Diarrhea
• Nausea or vomiting
The severity of symptoms varies from person-to-person depending on factors such as age, medical conditions, and how soon symptoms are addressed. Please seek emergency services if you or someone you know is experiencing the following:
• Persistent chest pains or pressure
• Trouble breathing
• Bluish color to lips or face
• Inability to wake or stay awake
• New confusion—appearing disoriented, or distracted with difficulty thinking clearly
Is there a cure for COVID-19?
There is no cure for COVID-19 and symptom management varies depending on the severity of symptoms. Social distancing measures have been put in place as to slow the spread of the virus. However, there have been breakthroughs in terms of vaccines to help the immune system recognize and better attack the virus in the event of infection.
You can learn more on the CDC website.
Who is the most vulnerable to COVID-19?
Older adults and individuals with severe underlying medical conditions generally are the most vulnerable to COVID-19. The risk of infection itself is not limited to the aforementioned groups as anyone can contract the virus and experience mild to severe symptoms despite their status of health.
How can I avoid being infected and infecting others?
Social distancing measures have been established to keep everyone safe. Do not leave home unless you must for work, essentials or for emergencies. Avoid having people over or visiting others.
If you must go out, always wear a mask, and maintain a distance of six feet when interacting with others outside of those you live with. You can carry hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol content. Avoid touching your face or mask.
Remember to wash your hands for at least twenty seconds with soap and water. At home, clean and disinfect any common surfaces. Cover your sneeze or cough with your elbow or a tissue (which you should safely discard afterwards).
Do masks help slow the spread of infection?
Masks help protect you and those around you as a barrier preventing respiratory droplets from reaching others. Even if you are not feeling sick, you should still wear a mask as you can still be a pre-symptomatic (not showing symptoms yet) or asymptomatic showing no symptoms) carrier of COVID-19.
